Sharing Memories of Mumbai 30 years ago

GLORIOUS!-Mumbai-Lentil-and-Chickpea.6510a77bf7fddfabdd5657b6f4f5a90aWhy would I want to go to Mumbai? Well, no reason in particular except that I’m Indian by ethnicity. Well, partly anyway.

My love of India has to do with the scents and aromas of Indian food.

I was born in India – way across Mumbai on the eastern side – in Kolkata.

The winter capital of the British Raj.

A cosmopolitan city.

Old fashioned and modern at the same time.

And the food – the food is to die for.

I grew up in Kolkata or as it was then called Calcutta.

It’s a hustle and bustle of a place.

There are endless streams of people.

No one follows traffic rules because there are none. You cross where you like intercepting cars and people and street stalls.

There is an incessant honking of cars that no one takes notice of.

It’s dirty, it’s dusty, it’s crowded but it’s a City of Joy.

I’ve been to Mumbai once – long ago. I was about 10 years old.

After Calcutta, Mumbai was more modern. There was a beach.

I remember having what was called a ‘Kalakhatta’ on the beach. It’s this iced lolly that you dip in a sweet and sour syrup and it still makes my mouth water.

I would love to take my daughter there.  She’s about the same age I was.

I would love to show her the Queens’ Necklace in Marine Drive – lights that look like a necklace.

I would love to show her the high rise buildings that house the rich and the slums that as much a part of the city and house the poor.

Most of all I would love to introduce her to the culinary delights of India. Indian food never tastes as good as it does in India. In fact, India has the unique nature of taking a dish and making it its own. And nothing tastes as good as that.

I was inspired to write this post by tasting the Mumbai Lentil and Chickpea Soup from Glorious Foods.

I would also love to mention Singapore as that’s theother part of my heritage and the Singapore Crushed Tomato soup tastes amazing too. But to know about my love affair with Singapore – well, that’s another story.

Maybe if I win, I’ll write about it on the flight to Mumbai!
