When the children are ill, I feel really helpless as I would love to make them better with the wave of a wand. That of course, does not happen in real life so I have to rely on medication to get them better.
When they are ill, my children, I suppose like most children, get really touchy and cranky. They don’t like the feel of the thermometer under their tongue or in their armpit. Since they never stay still while I am taking their temperature, I always feel that it is not reading correctly. And recently when E had a fever of 105, I definitely thought I was doing it wrong. Apparently, I wasn’t as it consistently read the same high temperature.
Luckily enough, I was sent a Braun Thermoscan IRT ear thermometer with ExacTempo Technology.
This was sent at just the right time as right after E, A fell ill and I needed to monitor her temperature regularly. It is really easy to use. All you need to do hold the on/off button till 3 lines appear on the LED display, then pop it into the ear canal and press the button on the back. A green light blinks to let you know you are doing it right and then there is a long beep and you have a reading.
If the green light does not show up, you know you are doing something wrong as it will also give an error message.
The children are happy to have their temperature taken and I am happy knowing that the reading is accurate. The thermometer is light and comes with a few extra lens filters that you need to change with every reading.
It also comes with a case which is very handy.
What is the benefit of measuring in the ear?
The goal of thermometry is to measure core body temperature which is the temperature of the vital organs. Ear temperatures accurately reflect core body temperature, since the eardrum shares blood supply with the temperature control centre in the brain, the hypothalamus.
Therefore, changes in body temperature are reflected sooner and more accurately in the ear than at other sites.
• Axillary temperatures only measure skin temperature and therefore, are not a reliable indicator of core body temperature.
• Oral temperatures are influenced by drinking, eating and breathing.
• Rectal temperatures lag behind changes in core body temperature and there is a risk of cross-contamination
I am so happy to have this thermometer at home and confident that I am getting the temperature reading right every time. Besides as it comes from a brand that I trust implicitly, I am safe in the knowledge that my children’s health is in good hands.
It is ideal for use on children but it can be used for the entire family so it is well worth having one at home.
The Braun Thermoscan Ear Thermometer 4520 is available in major retailers like Boots and Amazon.
