Who doesn’t love The Wizard of Oz? It’s got music and magic – two things that children enjoy.
We love the songs and Dorothy and Toto.
I didn’t know there was a Return to Oz film so when I was asked to review it I was quite thrilled.
I couldn’t wait to watch it with the children and we decided to make a movie night of it.
Armed with popcorn, we sat down to watch the film.
We were enthralled from the word go. It was interesting and magical and kept us totally absorbed. My son who had decided he didn’t want to watch a ‘girly movie’ but after a but of moaning on my part, sat down with us to watch it, enjoyed it. And I can tell you he’s a hard one to please.
Personally I had thought before watching it that animation could not compete with the original but it had an appeal of its own and was really great viewing for the entire family.
The storyline was a little different to the first with Dorothy being called out go Oz by her friends to help save Emerald City from the Jester (brother to the Wicked Witch of the East)
On her way she meets a friendly owl Wiser, who can’t fly but travels with her to the Emerald City. On their way they encounter some difficulties which serve to bring about some changes in their nature. They also meet Marshall Mallow and the China Princess.
Dorothy manages to save the day with the help of these friends but I am not going to tell you how as it would spoil the film for you.
All I can say is that you shouldn’t miss it.
It would be unfair to compare it to the original Wizard of Oz film because it is different being an animated film. It is however, just as interesting and endearing.
Perfectly aligned with the 75th anniversary of the original film, LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY’S RETURN sees Dorothy Gale (Michele) waking up to a devastated, post-tornado Kansas before being rushed back to Oz to save her old friends the Scarecrow
(Aykroyd), the Tin Man (Grammer), the Cowardly Lion (Belushi), Glinda the Good Witch (Bernadette Peters) and the entire Land of Oz from the devious brother of the Wicked Witch of the West – The Jester (Martin Short).
With Dorothy as their only hope to restore happiness to the Emerald City, she embarks on another journey along the yellow brick road, meeting a host of new friends including Wiser the Owl (Oliver Platt), Marshal Mallow (Dancy) and Tugg the Treeboat (Stewart) along the way.
Co-directed by Will Finn (Pocahontas, Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid) and Daniel St Pierre (The Lion King, Shark Tale, Tarzan) LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY’S RETURN is a fun-filled and magical adventure for all the family, revisiting a classic with a thoroughly modern slant.
Legends of Oz will be out on Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand on 22nd September 2014. This is definitely one for the Home Video Library.
