Finding time for self-care during maternity leave

From the last weeks of pregnancy to the first months of your child’s life, maternity leave is a special time. You might be thinking so much about your new baby that you forget to think about yourself. However, it is important that you find time for self-care and make yourself a priority. Remember that your energy will influence your baby.

If there is a deeper reason why you are distressed, then you may need to address these issues. Always speak to someone about how you are feeling. If an accident has caused it, then you may want to consider suing for emotional distress.

Go to a yoga class

Look for a prenatal or postnatal yoga class. This will increase flexibility, strengthen muscles, reduce stress, and improve your sleep.

It is also a great way to meet other moms and share any concerns that you have.

Speak with other moms

Speaking to other women going through the same thing as you is invaluable. Knowing that other people are going through the same thing as you makes all the difference.

The importance of sleep

When you are pregnant or you have a young child, it can be difficult to get enough sleep. However, sleep is so important to your mental health. If you are pregnant, then consider specially designed pillows to make you more comfortable. Once your new baby is here, try and sleep when they are sleeping.

Be mindful

Mindfulness techniques are powerful. Take some time to meditate every day. You can find lots of tutorials on YouTube.

Treat yourself

Have a manicure, a massage, a facial, whatever it may be. This might seem like a luxury you don’t need. However, you should find a way of treating yourself even if it is just every now and again.

Enlist help

It might seem difficult to leave your baby with someone else. However, a new baby can be overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, even if it is just an opportunity to get some undisturbed sleep.

Eat healthily

You might have little time to think about what you are eating. However, eating healthily will keep your spirits high.

Prepare meals and freeze them before your baby is born. That way, you will have easy but healthy meals at hand when your little one arrives.

This is also important if you are breastfeeding, as you are giving your nutrients to your baby. Remember that if you are breastfeeding, you will also need to eat more then you usually would.

Walk-in nature

Getting outside and going for walks will stop you from feeling claustrophobic in your house. Take your child out in a pushchair and get some fresh air.

Be kind to yourself

Many new parents put themselves down when things do not go to plan. Everyone is different, so try not to compare yourself. You need to do what is right for you and what is right for your baby. You are doing a fantastic job, so be kind to yourself.
