I have seen Despicable Me 2 and its not yet out in the cinema!! Here’s the whole story –
When I received the Mumsnet newsletter which spoke of an opportunity of Mumnetters to watch an exclusive screening of Despicable Me 2 in association with Universal Pictures UK, I did not hesitate in applying. It was on Father’s Day and I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to have a family day out. It was also to be held at Cineworld at the O2 Arena in London and we all had our fingers crossed that we would make the list.
When I saw the email from Katie from Mumsnet, I could not contain my excitement (for the children that is – well ok, I was excited too) I called up my husband, asked my aunt to watch the little one and signed in immediately and got the tickets booked.
It began at 3.30 pm with Fun in the Foyer and the actually screening at 4.30
Did I mention it was also 3D?
So the build up starts – we started by purchasing the Despicable Me DVD so we would be well versed in all the characters. We had a lovely family movie night with a picnic on the carpet (something the children enjoy)
Then, on Thursday, my aunt called up and said that she was ill and would not make it. My husband very gallantly volunteered to look after the little one, so I gave up one of my tickets.
I checked, and rechecked all the train timings into London and the O2 and we were due to reach the O2 by 14.45 which gave us enough time to look around a bit and find Cineworld etc. On Sunday, we were all raring to go. I left with Jadyn and Ethan and went to the train station only to find that the train was cancelled.
The next one was in over an hour. We would never reach on time. I could have cried. I called my husband and he came to the rescue and said he would take us by car.
Right, so we were now reaching at 15.15 (Still enough time). The route avoiding Central London had a diversion so we went sightseeing in London (by force).
I almost cried. The children did.
We were stuck in traffic and stuck means not moving for about 10 minutes at a time. As we travelled past Harrods, Piccadilly Square, Trafalgar – they held no interest. All I was bothered about was the time and kept checking my watch every minute.
The journey that should have taken an hour took 2 and a half hours. We reached at 4.30 and I shot out of the car, grabbed the children and ran with a quick goodbye to my husband and little one.
We missed the fun in the foyer and the children were really sad as there were no masks or balloons for them, but I am glad we did not turn around and head home (which at one point we nearly did, because the traffic was just not moving near Piccadilly)
But….we made the movie. And we were glad we did.
We were the ones who walked in late and disturbed everyone!
We saw the Movie!! (Have I mentioned that before?) Most important!!
So….was it worth it? You bet it was!
Despicable Me 2 was worth everything we went through. We missed a tiny bit of the movie but managed to catch up really easily. I will not spoil it for others and mention the story but let’s say that that movie was as good as, if not better than, the first part.
Despicable Me told the story of Gru a villain whose life changes when he meets three little girls, Margo, Edith and Agnes from an orphanage. It was funny and entertaining and we loved it.
Despicable Me 2 had the same appeal. The children were in splits and I too found it quite hilarious. There are poignant moments in the film but mostly it’s all fun. We loved being reacquainted with Gru, Margo, Edith, Agnes and the Minions. We love the Minions!! There were also some new characters that blended easily into the movie without taking the spotlight off the main characters.
The fact it was in 3D added to the fun. Loved the bubbles!!
The movie is engaging and really well made. It is simple enough for little ones to understand so relates to a wide range of audience. Amazing visuals, superb soundtrack and great storyline – what’s not to love?
This is one that you need to see in the cinema and purchase a copy for home to see at will. I know we will be getting it out on DVD to add to our collection.
It will be out on 28th June in the cinema, so don’t miss it. Take the entire family!
Once again a big thank you to Minionsnet…er…Mumsnet for the wonderful show.
