10 Tips to Help You Organize Your Closet

Your closet is one part of your house that can easily get out of hand. When life gets busy, it’s easy to just throw items into your closet or let untouched items sit in there indefinitely. Finally, it gets to a point that it’s intimidating to clean out and organize.

Don’t worry, though! In this article, we are going to look at 10 easy tips that you can use to get the most out of your closet space without losing your patience and tearing your hair out in the process.

1. Clean It Out

Before you can declutter your closet completely, you will want to get rid of anything that you don’t need. For many of us, it can be tempting to keep all of our old things but those t-shirts you haven’t worn in 2 years or that outfit you bought but never wore aren’t doing much more than taking up space.

To really make sure your closet stays organized, you are going to want to limit its contents to what is wanted and needed. If you are trying to make room for contents that aren’t necessary, you’re just complicating the process further than needed.

2. Take Everything Out

When you are getting ready to reorganize your closet empty it is best to take everything out. At first, this seems a little counterintuitive. After all, aren’t you just moving the mess out of the closet at this point?

Hold on, though, because there is a method to this madness. If you are trying to reorganize without taking everything out, your job can quickly become overwhelming. If you are getting a fresh look at everything, though, you are far more likely to get your closet organized successfully.

3. Use the Storage Space You Have Wisely

Before we get into more innovative techniques for organizing your closet, let’s start with the basics. This means you need to make sure that everything is as it should be in your closet, not haphazardly thrown in.

Make sure all your clothes are either on hangers or folded neatly rather than simply tossed in. You will also want to line up any shoes that you have in the closet rather than leaving them in a pile on the floor. The idea here is to make sure each item in your closet takes up as little space as possible.

4. Drawers and Dressers

For folded clothes and odds and ends – such as purses – many people find their closets aren’t always built with enough storage space. This is especially true if you live in a smaller house or apartment where there isn’t a lot of storage space.

In these instances, you will find that employing the use of a dresser or set of storage drawers is a great alternative. Even if they aren’t technically in your closet, these storage units will help to declutter your closet for better organization.

5. Don’t Be Afraid of Specialized Storage

When you are organizing your closet, don’t be afraid to invest in special storage tools for your things. For example, if you have a lot of ties, a tie hanger can go a long way in making sure that these are organized and taking up their minimal amount of space.

6. Use Wall Space

Don’t limit yourself to just the racks and shelves in your closet. Applying a hook or storage unit to the wall of your closetis a great way to utilize unused space. The most common example of this that is used is a shoe rack. Shoe racks help to keep your shoes up off the floor and in one place so you don’t lose one.

7. Move the Rod

When you hang your clothes in your closet, you usually hang them on a mounted rod. If that rod is made into the wall, there isn’t much you can do. However, many of these rods can be moved around.

In these cases, you should try to move the rod up as high as possible while still allowing you access to your clothes. By doing this, you are freeing up the space below your clothes. This is important because while more floor space usually means more storage, you don’t get anything out of having space above the rod in your closet.

8. Group Like Things Together

As you might have gleaned from other tips on this list, you should consider grouping like items together. The main idea for this is to keep everything in a place that’s easy to find. If you want a certain belt, for example, you will know that it’s with your other belts rather than having to search through your entire closet. Also, using decorative tags and labels will make it easierto find what you’re looking for. Sort, store, and label your clothing for a perfectly organized closet.

9. Organize Your Closet to Fit Your Needs

There are plenty of tips out there as to how to organize your clothes. However, your best option is to personalize your closet in such a way that you can easily find what you need when in the morning. For example, if you have a set of button down shirts that you choose from for work every day, put them in an easily visible and accessible place.

10. Take It a Step at a Time

Finally, don’t feel pressured to clean your closet all at once. When you take this approach, it’s much easier to get overwhelmed and give up halfway through. So, instead, try working on your closet a bit at a time. This way, you won’t get frustrated and it’ll be easier to stick with the concept of organization.
