When I saw a message on Twitter from Team Honk sometime last year about a relay for Sport Relief, I signed up (more out of curiosity to be honest) Little did I know how much I would get involved.
Now anyone who knows me, would know that I would much rather hail a cab than walk anywhere (including the school run, unfortunately cabs don’t go such short distances) So, how do the two relate?
Well…when Team Honk sent me what the proposal was about – I signed up to do a (short) walk and waited for further information almost certain that I could find a possible excuse to bow out.
However, when dates and times and routes were finalised, I found myself caught up in the euphoria of the entire event and I am now taking a train to meet the team at Vauxhall and then to walk from there to Victoria pushing a buggy. Whatever have I done?!
I am now totally caught up in the excitement and raring to join people I have spoken to online but never met on this epic relay for Sports Relief. Again, all of you who know me and read my blog will probably think I have completely lost it – to be walking in the cold (it is winter) pushing a buggy and probably be dressed in something silly or close. But I am sure that after reading on…you will totally support my walk and donate (generously) to my cause.
How it all started
I heard about Team Honk last year when I attended BritMums Live and they were awarded the Best Blog Award in the Commentary Category and I am proud to be a part of their massive fundraiser.
Team Honk was born when Annie and Tanya approached Comic Relief to find out how they could help. In December 2012, Annie, Tanya and Penny were invited to go to Ghana for the Charity’s 25th Birthday Celebrations. In March 2013, 20 bloggers climbed Snowdown to raise money for Sports Relief. Read all about Team Honk here.
This year, Team Honk has devised a person to person relay from Land’s End to John O’Groats (for my friends and readers not in the UK – it is the farthest tips of UK) It is a massive endeavour involving over 200 bloggers and their family and friends and you can read more about it here. Together, we aim to raise £20,000 for Sports Relief.
Of course, in London, it was decided that we could not leave out points of interest and what better way to have it done that use the Monopoly board. As a result HONKOPOLY was born and I am thrilled to be a part of it.
So, on the 5th of February, you will see me joining about 25 bloggers to take the Team Honk baton around London. Unfortunately, I cannot make the entire walk so I will be taking my little girl with me and pushing her buggy from Vauxhall to Victoria (which is a good 30 minute walk) I have yet to decide what I shall be wearing so will keep it a surprise and if you follow me on Twitter, I can guarantee a picture on the day.
Now to the main issue. I am not walking because the weather is great and I shall be doing a bit of shopping on the way. It is winter in the UK. It is cold and dreary and it may rain. I am walking to raise money for Sport Relief and this is where you come in. If you know me really well and know how I am not one for walking, you will know that I need all the sponsorship I can get to motivate me. London has a target of £500 and I know that with your help we can smash the target. So don’t wait any longer but click here to donate. Even £1 (although I would appreciate a bit more than that) will go a long way in providing a hot meal to a child living in extreme poverty in the UK.
This is the route we will be taking so if any of you want to come out to support us and cheer us on and of course donate, please do join us. We will be the odd-looking people dressed in onesies, with top hats, with Monopoly money sewn onto our shirts, pushing buggys, skipping, scootering and walking to raise money for Sports Relief.
If you think that you would like to get involved (besides donating to our cause), you can too…
The first ever Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games take place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd March 2014. The public can join the fun and games by running, swimming or cycling their way to raising cash at over a thousand venues around the country, including the landmark events at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
As one of the biggest fundraising events, Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active raise cash and change lives. The money raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to help transform the lives of some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people both at home in the UK and across the world.
